5 Mistakes People Make When Choosing Outdoor Tiles

5 Mistakes People Make When Choosing Outdoor Tiles

Garden season is almost here. That magical moment when outdoor spaces start waking up again and suddenly everyone is thinking about patios, terraces and long lunches in the sunshine. If you are planning a garden update before summer arrives, a little planning goes a long way. The designers at Baked Tiles have seen plenty of outdoor projects over the years, and a few common mistakes pop up time and time again. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"3 / 4","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"Casa-Cotto-Dark-36cm-x-36cm.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Casa-Cotto-Dark-36cm-x-36cm.webp?v=1771475570","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/68302238089601","size":353640,"createdAt":"2026-02-19T03:08:38Z"},{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"Sardinian-Terracotta-60cm-x-60cm-4.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Sardinian-Terracotta-60cm-x-60cm-4.webp?v=1754035844","height":1101,"width":956,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/65684488847745","size":158716,"createdAt":"2025-07-01T07:12:01Z"}],"isShowCaption":true,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":"","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-2"} Here are five things to think about before you start laying those tiles. 1. Falling in Love with a Tile That Is Not Made for Outdoors It sounds obvious, but it happens more often than you might think. A tile might look perfect, but if it is designed for interiors, it simply will not cope with outdoor life. Outdoor tiles need to handle everything the British weather throws at them. Rain, frost, sunshine and the occasional surprise downpour all play their part. That is why it is important to choose tiles that are specifically designed for exterior use. Outdoor porcelain and natural stone are created to handle the elements, with surfaces that are slip resistant and materials that stand up to frost and moisture. A little designer insight: always start your search in collections specifically labelled for outdoor use. It saves heartache later. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"3 / 4","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"1860-Templeton-Floral-Decor-15cm-x-15cm, 1860-Templeton-Corner-15cm-x-15cm | floor tiles","mimeType":"webp","title":"1860-Templeton-Border-15cm-x-15cm-6.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/1860-Templeton-Border-15cm-x-15cm-6.webp?v=1772078745","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/68359781908865","size":523704,"createdAt":"2026-02-25T03:08:44Z"},{"altText":"1860-Dapple-Rose-15cm-x-15cm | floor tiles","mimeType":"webp","title":"1860-Dapple-Ecru-15cm-x-15cm-3.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/1860-Dapple-Ecru-15cm-x-15cm-3.webp?v=1771905708","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/68302258110849","size":347290,"createdAt":"2026-02-19T03:10:18Z"}],"isShowCaption":true,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":"","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-3"} 2. Playing It Too Safe with Plain Paving When many of us picture a patio, we imagine simple slabs in soft greys or creamy neutrals. And while classic paving will always have its place, outdoor spaces are becoming far more design led. Patterned outdoor tiles are a wonderful way to bring personality into the garden. Think a sun terrace with a decorative motif underfoot, or a veranda that feels like it belongs in a boutique Mediterranean hotel. Thanks to porcelain technology, these decorative looks are now tough enough for outdoor living too. Remember, your garden is part of your home. It deserves just as much character. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"auto","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"1860 Canterbury Decor 15cm x 15cm - Out","mimeType":"webp","title":"1860-Canterbury-Decor-15cm-x-15cm-Out-5.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/1860-Canterbury-Decor-15cm-x-15cm-Out-5.webp?v=1754042074","height":1536,"width":1536,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/65737156854145","size":907222,"createdAt":"2025-07-07T13:49:17Z"},{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"1860-Saint-Germain-De-Pres-15cm-x-15cm_81872413.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/1860-Saint-Germain-De-Pres-15cm-x-15cm_81872413.webp?v=1771994604","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/68359725777281","size":528078,"createdAt":"2026-02-25T03:04:23Z"}],"isShowCaption":true,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":"","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-4"} 3. Skipping Professional Installation A patio might look simple on the surface, but what sits beneath it matters just as much. Proper groundwork is essential if you want your outdoor tiles to last. A professional installer will make sure the base is prepared correctly, levels are right, and everything is laid in a way that stands the test of time. Trying to cut corners here can lead to shifting tiles, poor drainage or cracking further down the line. Your room, our tiles. But a good installer makes all the difference. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"auto","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"Alfresco-Jannah-20mm-Paver-61cm-x-61cm.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Alfresco-Jannah-20mm-Paver-61cm-x-61cm.webp?v=1771995413","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/68359881621889","size":814384,"createdAt":"2026-02-25T03:15:36Z"},{"altText":"20mm Thick Manor House Antique Limestone Beige paving 80cm x 80cm","mimeType":"webp","title":"Manor-House-Antique-Limestone-Beige-20mm-Paver-80cm-x-80cm_5f35b22c.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Manor-House-Antique-Limestone-Beige-20mm-Paver-80cm-x-80cm_5f35b22c.webp?v=1757564580","height":2505,"width":2004,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/65735499055489","size":3820286,"createdAt":"2025-07-07T12:13:53Z"}],"isShowCaption":true,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":"","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-5"} 4. Forgetting About Drainage One of the most important parts of an outdoor tiling project is something you rarely see once the job is finished. Drainage. Without proper drainage, rainwater can collect on the surface or run towards your home. Neither is ideal. A skilled installer will build in subtle solutions such as gentle slopes or discreet drainage channels that allow water to flow away naturally. Done well, you will never notice it. But your patio will thank you every time it rains. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"auto","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"Manor-House-Antique-Limestone-White-20mm-Paver-80cm-x-80cm-4.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Manor-House-Antique-Limestone-White-20mm-Paver-80cm-x-80cm-4.webp?v=1754036009","height":587,"width":510,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/65684491862401","size":59792,"createdAt":"2025-07-01T07:12:54Z"},{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"Alfresco-Geo-Maroc-20mm-Paver-61cm-x-61cm-8.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Alfresco-Geo-Maroc-20mm-Paver-61cm-x-61cm-8.webp?v=1771993630","height":1174,"width":1020,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/65735015760257","size":258098,"createdAt":"2025-07-07T10:47:20Z"}],"isShowCaption":true,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":"","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-6"} 5. Choosing the Wrong Tile Size Size plays a bigger role than many people realise. Large format tiles can work beautifully in smaller patios because fewer grout lines help the space feel calmer and more open. It is a clever designer trick that makes compact areas feel bigger. Smaller tiles, on the other hand, can add detail and charm. They are lovely for pathways, garden borders or creating zones within a larger outdoor space. It is all about balance and scale. Getting this right makes your whole garden feel considered and cohesive. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"auto","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"London-Town-Geo-Cherry-20cm-x-20cm.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/London-Town-Geo-Cherry-20cm-x-20cm.webp?v=1772085369","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/68370013061505","size":574850,"createdAt":"2026-02-26T03:21:22Z"},{"altText":"Manor House Antique Limestone White 80cm x 80cm","mimeType":"webp","title":"Manor-House-Antique-Limestone-White-20mm-Paver-80cm-x-80cm_af4c5f52.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Manor-House-Antique-Limestone-White-20mm-Paver-80cm-x-80cm_af4c5f52.webp?v=1757564562","height":1394,"width":1211,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/65735497908609","size":238902,"createdAt":"2025-07-07T12:13:36Z"}],"isShowCaption":true,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":"","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-7"} Your Garden, Your Style Outdoor tiles should feel just as thoughtfully chosen as the ones inside your home. Whether you lean towards a porcelain tile that mirrors the charm and character of natural stone, decorative patterns or warm Mediterranean tones, the right choice will turn a patio into a place you truly love spending time in. Why Blue Bathrooms Are Having a Moment

Why Blue Bathrooms Are Having a Moment

From soft, powdery blues to rich cobalt and deep ocean tones, blue bathrooms are making waves in interior design. Effortlessly calming yet full of character, blue tiles are becoming a favourite for homeowners and designers looking to create bathrooms that feel both timeless and beautifully individual. At Baked Tiles, we believe a bathroom should be more than just a functional space. It should be somewhere to slow down, unwind and enjoy a little everyday luxury. And when it comes to creating that feeling, blue tiles might just be the perfect place to start. Whether you're planning a complete bathroom renovation or simply looking to refresh your space, here are five reasons why we're falling in love with blue bathrooms. 5 Reasons to Choose Blue Tiles BROWSE BLUE TILES 1. Blue Creates an Instant Sense of Calm There's something naturally soothing about blue. Reminiscent of clear skies, tranquil seas and peaceful coastal escapes, it's a colour that instantly brings a sense of calm to a room. In the bathroom, where relaxation is key, soft shades of blue can transform even the smallest space into a spa-like sanctuary. Think delicate duck egg blues, muted aquamarines and gentle, washed-out tones paired with warm whites and natural materials. The Baked Tiles tip: Choose blue tiles with a subtle variation in tone or a softly textured glaze. These little imperfections catch the light beautifully, adding depth and warmth to an otherwise simple scheme. Products Shown: Lava Aqua, Evelyn Green, Little Italy Sky Blue 2. There's a Blue for Every Style One of the things we love most about blue tiles is just how versatile they are. It's not just about choosing the perfect shade of blue, but how you choose to style it! You might fall for a beautiful patterned blue tile with a softer, more organic feel, or perhaps a bold, contemporary chequerboard design is more your thing. From delicate powder blues to rich navy tones and vibrant cobalt shades, there's so much room to play with colour, pattern and texture. Whether you're creating a relaxed, Mediterranean-inspired bathroom or something a little more modern and playful, blue tiles can take on so many different looks. The Baked Tiles tip: Don't be afraid to have fun with blue! Mix different shades, experiment with patterns or try a chequerboard layout for a fresh, contemporary twist. It's amazing how one colour can create so many completely different looks. Products Shown: Koi, 1860 Blue, 1860 Vanilla 3. Blue Tiles Bring Depth, Texture and Personality While neutral bathrooms will always have their place, we're seeing a growing desire for interiors that feel a little more expressive and personal. Blue tiles offer the perfect opportunity to introduce colour without overwhelming a space. Their beauty lies in the incredible range of tones, finishes and textures available. Glossy blue tiles reflect light and bring a sense of movement to walls, while matt finishes create a softer, more understated effect. Handmade-look tiles, with their gently uneven surfaces and tonal variation, add an artisanal quality that makes a bathroom feel thoughtfully curated. For those who love a bolder look, rich blue tiles can create a stunning feature wall behind a freestanding bath or within a walk-in shower. The Baked Tiles tip: Let your tiles do the talking. Pair richly coloured or textured blue tiles with simple sanitaryware and understated accessories for a look that feels effortlessly stylish rather than overly busy. Products Shown: Aura Blue, Bodega 4. Blue Pairs Beautifully with Natural Materials If there's one combination we're particularly drawn to, it is blue tiles paired with warm, natural materials. Blue and wood are a match made in design heaven. The coolness of the blue is beautifully balanced by the warmth of oak, walnut or other timber finishes, creating a bathroom that feels welcoming and relaxed. Natural limestone and terracotta also work wonderfully alongside blue, adding texture and an organic feel to the space. For a little extra luxury, introduce brushed brass or bronze fixtures. These warmer metallic finishes contrast beautifully with blue, creating a look that's sophisticated without feeling too formal. The Baked Tiles tip: For an effortlessly elegant scheme, try pairing soft blue wall tiles with a warm stone-effect floor and a natural wood vanity. It's a combination that feels fresh, timeless and wonderfully inviting. Products Shown: Havana Nights Fan Indigo, Havana Nights Indigo Plain, Real Terracotta Parquet, Delicato Luca 5. Blue Is a Colour That Never Really Goes Out of Style Trends come and go, but blue has always had a place in interiors. From traditional Delft-inspired ceramics to Mediterranean mosaics and contemporary glazed tiles, blue has been used in beautiful spaces for generations. It's this timeless quality that makes blue such a wonderful choice for bathrooms. While certain shades and tile shapes may rise in popularity, blue itself has an enduring appeal that allows it to evolve alongside your personal style. A classic navy tile can feel traditional when paired with marble and polished nickel, or beautifully contemporary alongside clean lines and minimalist fittings. Similarly, soft blue tiles can be styled with natural textures for a relaxed coastal look or with more refined finishes for something altogether more sophisticated. The Baked Tiles tip: If you're looking for a bathroom design that will stand the test of time, choose a shade of blue you genuinely love and keep your larger fixtures simple. You can always refresh the look with new accessories, lighting and finishing touches. Hello Autumn: 5 Tiles for the New Season

By October, there’s no mistaking the change in season. The mornings have a little more bite. The light has shifted. Leaves are collecting at the edges of pavements and leaving the house without a jacket is starting to feel overly optimistic. With the autumn equinox behind us, the days are getting shorter and the evenings darker. Summer feels firmly over, and we’re spending more time indoors as autumn settles in. Windows that have been thrown open for months begin to close. Lamps are switched on earlier. The sofa suddenly looks much more appealing than the garden chair. We start craving interiors that feel warmer, richer and altogether more cocooning. Summer’s breezy blues and fresh whites don’t have to disappear, of course. But this is the time of year when burnt terracotta, forest green, plum, ochre and coffee brown start looking especially good. Here are five Baked Tiles designs helping us settle very happily into the season. REAL TERRACOTTA If autumn were a tile, Baked Real Terracotta Parquet would have a fairly convincing claim to the title. Its handmade, sun-baked terracotta tones echo the rusts, browns and burnt oranges appearing outdoors, while natural variation gives the surface the sort of depth that feels instantly established. The elongated format is made for movement, whether you choose parquet or herringbone. Picture it with creamy walls, a vintage wooden table, piles of logs and a wool rug and you’ve essentially got our autumn mood board sorted. Better still, real terracotta responds beautifully to underfloor heating - exactly the sort of detail that becomes increasingly persuasive as the mornings cool. Products Shown: Baked Real Terracotta Parquet 1860 PLUM There are summer colours and there are autumn colours. 1860 Plum most definitely belongs in the second camp. Its deep plum hue has the richness we start craving once daylight becomes softer and evenings arrive earlier. Plum is also a useful reminder that an autumn palette doesn’t have to mean a sea of orange and brown. Pair it with creamy neutrals for something elegant, bring in aged brass for extra warmth, or sit it beside a muted green for a scheme that feels taken straight from the hedgerows. Products Shown: 1860 Plum, 1860 Vanilla, Cottage Sea Grass Gloss KITKAT LUSTRE CARAMEL Caramel is one of those shades that comes into its own at this time of year. Rich and warming without feeling too dark, these slender KitKat tiles have a lustrous glaze that gives the colour real depth, shifting subtly as the light moves across the surface. Paired with warm neutrals, natural wood or deeper browns, they make a convincing case for bringing a little more richness into the room. Journeyman Zellige Green does it in a rich, glossy way, with tonal and textural variation designed to catch the light. And autumn light is exactly where glossy tiles come into their own. As lamps replace daylight, reflective surfaces take on a new character. Use this green in a kitchen with natural timber, on a bathroom wall with warm metal finishes, or around a feature area where its depth can really be appreciated. There’s something particularly cosy about this stone. Its warm, earthy tones and softly tumbled finish make us think of autumn weekends in the Cotswolds – wellies by the door, leaves underfoot and coming home to somewhere warm after a long walk. Of course, good tiles aren’t seasonal. These are colours, textures and materials that work beautifully year-round, we just happen to think they really come into their own in autumn. So, close the doors, pour yourself something warm and settle into the season. Products Shown: Bibury Stone - Fosse Way Limestone Tumbled
Brown Bathroom Ideas: 5 Ways to Embrace the Warmest Tile Trend

Brown Bathroom Ideas: 5 Ways to Embrace the Warmest Tile Trend

Move over cool grey. Brown is bringing warmth back to the bathroom. From milky coffee and soft taupe to terracotta, walnut and deep chocolate, brown tiles have a wonderfully grounding quality. They can make a bathroom feel cocooning without making it dark, natural without becoming overly rustic, and seriously stylish without relying on a passing fad. Better still, there isn't just one way to do brown. Whether your dream bathroom is calm and spa-like, rich and characterful or full of pattern, here are five ways to bring this earthy palette home. 1. Start softly with warm neutrals You don't need to dive straight into dark chocolate tones to create a brown bathroom. Beige, biscuit, sand, caramel and taupe all belong to the same warm family and are a brilliant place to begin if you prefer a lighter look. A stone-effect tile is particularly good at creating this softer interpretation. Manor House Antique Limestone Beige has the warmth and natural-looking variation that makes a room feel established rather than stark, while its generous format can help create a calmer, more continuous finish. Keep the rest of the palette tonal: think warm white walls, pale wood, woven storage, linen, aged brass and just a few deeper brown accents. The result feels relaxed, layered and far removed from the clinical bathrooms of old. Products Shown: Manor House Antique Limestone Beige 2. Bring in the warmth of wood Few materials make a room feel as instantly inviting as wood, but a bathroom isn't always the easiest environment for the real thing. That's where wood-effect porcelain comes into its own. For a richer look, Woodland Parquet Walnut brings those deep, nutty brown tones together with the movement of a parquet-style format. Use it to introduce warmth to the floor, or take the timber look further to create a more enveloping scheme. If you prefer something larger and more contemporary, Osaka In & Out Teak combines brown and beige tones with a wood-effect finish, making it an interesting option for a modern, nature-led bathroom. Use terracotta as your route into brown Somewhere between brown, rust, burnt orange and clay sits terracotta - and it's one of the easiest ways to make a bathroom feel warmer. For an earthy, handcrafted look without committing to one flat shade, try Marrakesh Terracotta Brick Dark Matt. The slim brick format gives you plenty of freedom with the layout, too. Stack it for something clean and contemporary, use a traditional brick bond, or turn it into a herringbone feature. Pair either with warm white, plaster pink, muted green or timber to keep the overall scheme feeling natural. 4. Take chequerboard to the walls Who says chequerboard belongs on the floor? Taking this classic pattern up the walls is a brilliant way to give a brown bathroom a more playful edge - especially when you swap traditional black and white for something warmer. Zellige Muse Mocha is just the shade for it. Pair its rich chocolatey brown with a contrasting cream or off-white square tile to create a chequerboard wall that feels bold without becoming stark. Try it behind the basin, around a bath or across an entire feature wall. The glossy, zellige-inspired finish brings extra depth to the pattern, catching the light and helping those warm mocha tones come alive. Keep the rest of the scheme simple with natural wood, warm metals and creamy neutrals, and let the wall take centre stage. Proof that brown bathrooms can have plenty of fun, too. If you want your brown bathroom to have a little more personality, introduce different scales, finishes and patterns rather than covering every surface in exactly the same tile. KitKat Lustre Cappuccino is a great example. The slim mosaic format and cappuccino colouring bring together two useful ingredients: warm brown colour and a surface with plenty of visual detail. Use it behind a basin, across a feature wall or inside a shower area to punctuate a quieter scheme. You can also pair terracotta or cappuccino shades with checks, stripes or patterned floors. Add burgundy, dusty pink, olive green or even pale blue and suddenly brown becomes the grounding colour that allows everything else in the room to shine. Brown bathrooms work because they make a room designed around water feel warmer, softer and more connected to nature. Whether you get there through stone, terracotta or a glossy cappuccino accent, the trick is to layer the shades rather than searching for one perfect brown.
