Garden season is almost here. That magical moment when
outdoor spaces start waking up again and suddenly everyone is thinking about
patios, terraces and long lunches in the sunshine.
If you are planning a garden update before summer arrives, a
little planning goes a long way. The designers at Baked Tiles have seen plenty
of outdoor projects over the years, and a few common mistakes pop up time and
time again.

Here are five things to think about before you start laying
those tiles.
1. Falling in Love with a Tile That Is Not Made for Outdoors
It sounds obvious, but it happens more often than you might
think. A tile might look perfect, but if it is designed for interiors, it
simply will not cope with outdoor life.
Outdoor tiles need to handle everything the British weather
throws at them. Rain, frost, sunshine and the occasional surprise downpour all
play their part.
That is why it is important to choose tiles that are
specifically designed for exterior use. Outdoor porcelain and natural stone are
created to handle the elements, with surfaces that are slip resistant and
materials that stand up to frost and moisture.
A little designer insight: always start your search in
collections specifically labelled for outdoor use. It saves heartache later.

2. Playing It Too Safe with Plain Paving
When many of us picture a patio, we imagine simple slabs in
soft greys or creamy neutrals. And while classic paving will always have its
place, outdoor spaces are becoming far more design led.
Patterned outdoor tiles are a wonderful way to bring
personality into the garden. Think a sun terrace with a decorative motif
underfoot, or a veranda that feels like it belongs in a boutique Mediterranean
hotel.
Thanks to porcelain technology, these decorative looks are
now tough enough for outdoor living too.
Remember, your garden is part of your home. It deserves just
as much character.

3. Skipping Professional Installation
A patio might look simple on the surface, but what sits
beneath it matters just as much.
Proper groundwork is essential if you want your outdoor
tiles to last. A professional installer will make sure the base is prepared
correctly, levels are right, and everything is laid in a way that stands the
test of time.
Trying to cut corners here can lead to shifting tiles, poor
drainage or cracking further down the line.
Your room, our tiles. But a good installer makes all the
difference.

4. Forgetting About Drainage
One of the most important parts of an outdoor tiling project
is something you rarely see once the job is finished. Drainage.
Without proper drainage, rainwater can collect on the
surface or run towards your home. Neither is ideal.
A skilled installer will build in subtle solutions such as
gentle slopes or discreet drainage channels that allow water to flow away
naturally. Done well, you will never notice it. But your patio will thank you
every time it rains.

5. Choosing the Wrong Tile Size
Size plays a bigger role than many people realise.
Large format tiles can work beautifully in smaller patios
because fewer grout lines help the space feel calmer and more open. It is a
clever designer trick that makes compact areas feel bigger.
Smaller tiles, on the other hand, can add detail and charm.
They are lovely for pathways, garden borders or creating zones within a larger
outdoor space.
It is all about balance and scale. Getting this right makes
your whole garden feel considered and cohesive.

VIEW OUR REAL TERRACOTTA
1. Real Terracotta Is a Natural Material
Terracotta is made from natural clay that is shaped and fired at relatively low
temperatures. Unlike porcelain or ceramic alternatives, authentic terracotta
retains an earthy, organic quality that gives every tile subtle tonal
variation, texture, and character.
2. Terracotta Changes Over Time
One of terracotta’s greatest strengths is the way it ages. Over time, the
surface develops a richer patina that adds depth and authenticity to your home.
3. Sealing Is Essential
Real terracotta is naturally porous, which means it absorbs moisture and stains
if left untreated. Proper sealing is one of the most important steps in
installing and maintaining terracotta tiles. We have a useful terracotta
document that we recommend reading here.
We are frequently asked “how often should I
reseal terracotta flooring?” and it largely depends on how the space is used. Busy
footfall areas such as hallways and kitchens may benefit from resealing every
year, while lower-traffic spaces can often go longer between treatments.
Regular maintenance helps protect the tiles while preserving the rich warmth
and character that makes real terracotta so timeless.

4. Terracotta Works Beautifully with
Underfloor Heating
Terracotta retains heat exceptionally well, making it an excellent partner for
underfloor heating systems.
5. Terracotta works in both contemporary
and classic homes
If you have a more contemporary
home, terracotta can feel just as at home as it does in more traditional
spaces. Real terracotta can be surprisingly refined, depending on the grout
colour and installation pattern you choose. Parquet, basketweave, stacked, and
brick bond layouts are all worth exploring.
6. It Requires the Right Cleaning
Products
Terracotta is porous and naturally alkaline-sensitive so harsh chemical
cleaners should be avoided. Regular
sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment will help remove everyday
dust and dirt, while a pH-neutral cleaner is best for keeping the surface clean
without damaging the tile or sealant.

7. Colour Variation Is Part of the
Beauty
Terracotta ranges from soft pinks and warm oranges to rich burnt reds and
earthy browns, with natural variation throughout.
8. Installation Matters More Than You
Think
Installing real terracotta requires more care than standard porcelain tiles due
to its porous and often handmade nature, we recommend you always work with an
expert.
9. Real Terracotta Brings Warmth
Terracotta brings a natural warmth, texture, and sense of authenticity into the
home that few other materials can match. Its rich earthy tones pair beautifully
with warm neutrals, soft whites, natural wood, olive greens. We even love
terracotta teamed with blues and pinks. Take a look at our Mediterranean Edit here, for all the
inspiration you might need.
10. Grout Choice
Makes a Big Difference
The grout you choose
can completely change the overall look of terracotta tiles. A lighter grout
creates a softer, more contemporary feel, while warmer grout tones enhance the
rustic character of the floor.
Because terracotta is
porous, tiles should always be properly sealed before and after grouting to
help prevent staining and make cleaning easier during installation. We also suggest this product is installed with a wider joint to
enhance its rustic quality.
We suggest teaming terracotta with our Alabaster Grout
And finally, enjoy it!
Real terracotta is a
material to be lived with and enjoyed. Its warmth, texture, variation, and
natural ageing are exactly what makes it so special.
TOP TIPS FROM INTERIOR DESIGNER LESLEY TAYLOR BIID, FOUNDER OF BAKED TILES
There is no denying it, using the same tile internally and externally creates a seamless visual flow that immediately elevates a space. When done properly, it’s not just a stylistic decision, it’s a really practical one.
As an interior designer, I often specify continuous flooring where the inside meets the outside. It’s one of the most effective ways to visually extend a room, making spaces feel larger, calmer, and more connected to their surroundings.
WHY IT WORKS
Consistency in materials removes visual breaks. When your eye isn’t interrupted by bulky thresholds, changes in tone, or competing finishes, the entire space will feel much larger.
This is particularly powerful in:
•Kitchen-diner extensions opening on to terraces
•Garden rooms or orangeries
•Contemporary renovations where glazing plays a dominant role
The result is a quiet confidence, nothing is shouting for attention, yet everything feels considered.
Large-format porcelain tiles tend to work especially well here, enhancing that uninterrupted feel and reducing grout lines both inside and out.

THE PRACTICAL REALITY
This approach isn’t as simple as choosing one tile and running with it everywhere. The specification is critical for a successful life-long installation.
For external use, you must be looking at a 20mm thick porcelain tile if it’s being installed on a standard external build-up (such as on pedestals, gravel, or sand). This thickness provides the structural strength required.
The exception is when you are tiling onto a solid concrete slab. In that case, a thinner, frost proof tile can be used with great effect.

SLIP RESISTANCE VS EASY TO LIVE WITH
External tiles need to be slip-resistant and frost proof. That’s non-negotiable. British weather alone makes that decision for you.
However, the challenge comes when you’re trying to match that external finish internally.
Highly textured, anti-slip tiles might perform beautifully outdoors, rainwater washing over them will help to keep them clean, but inside they can become impractical as they:
•Hold onto dirt
•Are harder to clean
•Feel harsh underfoot
The key is balance.
Some of our ranges come with the same tile in two finishes:
•A higher slip rating for outside
•A softer, more refined finish for inside
Visually, the tiles look identical, whilst being fully fit for their respective conditions.
If you insist on using the same tile in both areas, be very careful about the slip rating, you want something that meets safety requirements externally but doesn’t make everyday living inside unnecessarily difficult.

THE DETAIL THAT MAKES IT WORK
The threshold between inside and out is also another important element, as it’s what makes the seamless transition work so well.
To achieve a seamless transition between indoors and out, ensure that:
•Your floor levels are carefully coordinated to be as close as possible
•Door thresholds are minimal or flush to enhance the flowing effect
It’s also very important to consider drainage, and how rainwater will run off the exterior area to prevent any leaks internally.
This isn’t something to resolve at the end of a project and really needs to be designed in from the outset.
Using the same tile inside and out is one of those decisions that looks effortless, but it needs to be properly thought through. Get it right, and you create a space that feels expansive, calm, and quietly luxurious.
Our guide by Lesley Taylor BIID interior designer and Founder of
Baked Tiles
Mediterranean garden style has surged in popularity and its not
just the less intensive maintenance that makes it appealing. Its real strength
lies in something broader: it connects effortlessly with the way interiors are
evolving too. Warmer, softer, more textural spaces are replacing cooler, more
rigid schemes—and together, house and garden are starting to feel like one
continuous environment.
A Different Kind of Garden
Mediterranean garden design is defined not just by specific
plants but also more by atmosphere. It’s relaxed, tonal, and deliberately
understated. Let’s be fair we would rather take time to enjoy the garden that
be tied up maintaining it! Hotter, drier summers, hosepipe bans,
and the ongoing frustration of maintaining traditional lawns have pushed many
towards something more resilient—and far less labour-intensive.
The look enbrances:
Gravel and paving replacing large areas of lawn
Silvery, aromatic planting—olive, lavender, rosemary
Terracotta, timber, and sun-softened materials
Informal layouts designed for sitting and lingering

Why It Works Here . ..Perhaps Better Than Expected!
What’s interesting is how well this style translates to the UK. The warm, muted palette prevents spaces from feeling flat under
grey skies, while gravel and free-draining planting handle both heavy rain and
dry spells more effectively than traditional borders. There’s also a sense of permanence to it. Evergreen structure,
natural materials, and a slightly weathered aesthetic mean the garden holds its
own year-round—it doesn’t disappear in winter or peak for just a few weeks in
summer.
Where Interiors Come Into It
The real success of Mediterranean garden style, though, is how
naturally it aligns with current interior design directions. This is where many homes are quietly getting it right—not by
matching styles exactly, but by creating a shared design language between
inside and out.
Rustic Country
A more restrained version of rustic country sits perfectly
alongside a Mediterranean garden. Think limewashed walls, natural stone effect or aged timber look
floors, and upholstery in linen rather than anything overly tailored. The
palette stays soft—chalky whites, warm neutrals, muted earth tones. Nothing feels overly styled, which is exactly why it works. The
same informality you see outside continues indoors.
Modern Organic
For more contemporary homes, modern organic interiors create a
seamless transition. Cleaner lines are balanced with texture—plaster walls, pale
woods, soft fabrics—and the palette stays deliberately restrained. Large
openings onto the garden become part of the design, not an afterthought. The result is continuity. The same tones and materials move
quietly from inside to out, helping to make even the smallest of gardens look
as expansive as possible.
A Subtle Mediterranean Influence Indoors
In some cases, the connection is more direct. Soft architectural
details such as arches or niches, textured plaster finishes, and the
introduction of handmade elements—ceramics, terracotta, simple joinery—help
blur the boundary between house and garden. Done well, this style should never feels themed.

Creating a Seamless Flow
What ties all of this together is consistency.
A few principles tend to make the biggest difference:
Keep the palette aligned across interior and garden
Repeat materials—stone effect or terracotta look paving
and mediterranean pattern
Avoid sharp visual contrasts between inside and out
Prioritise texture over decoration
Create physical connections between inside and out—
where doors, thresholds, sightlines meet or view the garden.
It’s about removing the sense that the garden and the interior
belong to different worlds.
A More Considered Way of Living
Ultimately, the popularity of Mediterranean garden style isn’t
just aesthetic. It reflects a broader shift towards homes that feel more
relaxed. Spaces that work with the climate we’re actually experiencing—and that
support a slower, more outdoor-focused way of living. The garden becomes an extension of the house. And the house, in turn, feels more connected to its surroundings.
Creating a beautiful outdoor space doesn’t depend on size, it’s
all about how you use your tiles. With the right approach, even the smallest
garden can feel open, inviting, and full of character. Tiles provide a durable
and design-led foundation, but how you choose, lay, and style them makes all
the difference. Whether you’re looking to visually expand a compact space or
embrace its proportions with a more characterful finish, these expert tips from
Lesley Taylor, Founder of Baked Tiles will help you make confident design
decisions from the ground up.

1. Define your design direction from the outset
Before selecting tiles, decide what you want the space to achieve. Are you
aiming to make it feel as open and expansive as possible, or would you rather
lean into its size and create something more intimate and characterful?
2. For a sense of space, think large and understated
To visually extend the garden, choose larger-format tiles and pair them with
grout that closely matches the tile colour. Minimising contrast reduces the
appearance of joints, avoiding a grid-like look and helping the space feel more
seamless and expansive.
3. Create flow between indoors and out
Continuing the same tile style from inside your home into the garden
establishes visual continuity. This approach softens the transition between
spaces and enhances the feeling of openness throughout.
4. Use lighter tones to enhance openness
Lighter tiles reflect more natural light, instantly making a space feel
brighter and more spacious. While darker tones can be impactful, they tend to
visually compress smaller outdoor areas.
5. Embrace character by focusing on detail
If you’re leaning into a smaller, more atmospheric space, detail becomes key.
Consider stone-effect porcelain with softly irregular edges, laid with wider
joints and finished with pea gravel for a relaxed, rustic feel. Alternatively,
introduce subtle pattern and soften the edges with layered planting in pots.
Avoid strong borders, corner features, or “rug effect” layouts, as these can
visually contain the space and make it feel smaller.
With a considered approach, even the most compact garden can
feel purposeful, balanced, and beautifully designed.

And the finishing touches that make all the difference…
How you furnish and style the space is just as important as
the tiles themselves.
Choose furniture that keeps the floor visible
Opt for garden furniture with raised legs rather than solid or modular
pieces that sit directly on the ground. Being able to see more of the
floor creates a stronger sense of openness and flow.
Lift some of the planting off the ground
Use a mix of raised planters, wall-mounted pots, or vertical greenery.
This draws the eye upward and frees up valuable floor space, making the
layout feel less congested.
Limit the number of materials and colours
A restrained palette helps the space feel calm and cohesive. Too many
finishes or competing tones can visually break up the area and make it
feel smaller.
Use soft layering to add depth
Introduce cushions, throws, and planting to soften hard surfaces, but keep
arrangements loose and informal. The aim is to add interest without
totally overpowering the space.
