Square is the most classic tile format there is, used across an enormous range of styles, and it works just as comfortably in a traditional bathroom as it does in a thoroughly contemporary one.
Large format square tiles keep grout lines to a minimum for a calm, contemporary bathroom finish, while smaller square tiles bring texture to a feature wall, behind the basin, or inside a shower nook. It is worth remembering you are not limited to a standard grid layout: square tiles can be offset, stacked, or turned forty-five degrees for a diagonal pattern, or combined in a classic checkerboard. On the floor, choose a naturally finished tile rather than anything polished, since gloss turns slippery once wet. A diagonal layout also brings real movement to a smaller bathroom, making the room feel a little larger than its footprint suggests.
