Small format tiles bring a level of detail outside that a larger paving slab cannot, working wonderfully on a garden path, a step, or a smaller courtyard where pattern underfoot adds real character. The extra grout lines at this scale also help with grip, which is no small thing on an outdoor surface.
Porcelain remains the sensible material choice for any outdoor tile, since it is frost proof, dense, and largely unaffected by the damp conditions that cause natural stone to stain or flake over time. At this smaller scale, tiles still need a properly prepared concrete base and exterior-grade adhesive rather than a simple sand bed, which is more the territory of our thicker 20mm pavers. Look for an anti-slip finish wherever the tile will be walked on, and consider a pattern or wood effect design if you want the space to feel a little more considered.
