Kitchen Floor Tiles Kitchen Floor Tiles

The kitchen floor takes more punishment than any other surface in the house, spills, dropped pans, muddy boots, daily footfall, and it needs to look as good after ten years as it did on day one. Large format porcelain is our most recommended choice for exactly this reason: it wipes clean in moments, copes with heavy use, and comes in stone, wood, cement and plain finishes to suit almost any kitchen style.

If your kitchen is on the smaller side, do not assume a bold choice is off the table. A decorative patterned tile on a compact kitchen floor can add real personality and often makes the room feel more finished rather than busier. In a larger or more open kitchen, a calmer large format tile tends to let the cabinetry and worktops do the talking instead.

Whichever direction you lean, these are tiles chosen for strength and ease of living as much as looks, practical enough for the heart of the home but still design-led enough to enjoy looking at every day.

    Kitchen Refresh Ideas

    Kitchen Refresh Ideas

If you’re thinking of moving, a few simple kitchen makeover ideas might be all you need. A mini kitchen makeover can also help you fall back in love without spending a fortune. As the true heart of the home, the kitchen deserves as much care and attention as any other room. It may even deserve more. Why not show it some love this season? A kitchen makeover certainly doesn’t have to involve ripping out and replacing cabinets. A few considered updates and a fresh coat of paint can work wonders. With very little outlay, you can completely transform your kitchen into a stylish, liveable space. It will feel current rather than dated. Painting the cabinet doors is still one of the most effective, affordable ways of reviving your kitchen. Chances are, the original design was carefully invested in. It would be a shame to let its structure and craftsmanship go to waste. Just like a car, the longevity of a kitchen depends on how well it is maintained. Instead of waiting years for the budget for a full replacement, consider a thoughtful refresh. This can keep your kitchen looking relevant and elevated. If you are going to refresh your doors, consider updating an older kitchen further. Remove some wall cabinets and replace them with open shelving. This approach continues to be popular, but now leans towards a curated, pared-back look. It feels less like purely functional display. A deVOL-inspired aesthetic works beautifully in a traditional kitchen. A softer, more minimal Scandinavian influence suits contemporary spaces. Both styles are now often grounded with warmer tones and natural materials rather than stark whites. Over time, woods can fade, scratches begin to show, and a tired exterior detracts from its once fresh appearance. Preparation is key with this type of DIY work. Take your time and sand any marks carefully before applying paint. A well-prepared surface is what gives that professional, durable finish many people overlook. Not all paints will be suitable for this kind of job, so it’s worth researching beforehand. Specialist paints for MDF and melamine are ideal for laminate doors. There are now excellent durable finishes available that resist everyday wear and tear. Your local painter’s merchant will have plenty of options. It’s also worth investing in a high-quality, non-shedding brush and a short-pile roller. Choose a non-foam roller to achieve that smooth, contemporary finish. This is especially important with the deeper, more saturated tones currently on trend. Once you have removed the doors and handles, place them on a protected surface. Clean thoroughly with sugar soap to remove grease and residue. After rinsing and drying, lightly sand to create a key, then begin painting. Use a brush for detailed areas and a roller for flat surfaces. Taking your time between coats will make all the difference to the final result. This method works well for laminate doors. If your kitchen features varnished wood or previously painted timber, preparation is different. You will need to sand back the surface properly or use a suitable bonding primer. Apply this before adding your topcoat. Skipping this stage is often where results fall short. The fun part is choosing a colour that will bring your kitchen to life. Warm, grounded tones are dominating current interiors. Think rich terracotta, oxblood reds, clay tones and deep earthy browns for your scheme. These feel more modern than cooler blues and ever popular green tones. These colours add depth, sophistication and a sense of permanence. Neutrals still play an important role, but they’ve shifted warmer in tone. Soft stone, chalky beige, limestone and muted creams create a calm base. These pair beautifully with stronger tones, introducing colour without overwhelming the space. Natural materials, such as timber, aged brass and stone, work effortlessly alongside this palette. Subtle texture is also key to the look. Handmade finishes like Zellige tiles add depth without needing bold pattern. Tiles with a variegated glaze and textured body achieve a similar effect. A simple change of flooring can also bring a tired space back to life. Don't be fearful of the mess associated with hacking up existing tiles. If the existing ones are secure, you can simply tile over them. Also, be aware of the continued evolution of paint effects. Rather than heavily distressed finishes, the trend now leans towards softer, more refined texture. Think limewash, plaster-effect walls and gently patinated cabinetry. These finishes feel authentic rather than overly styled. The aim is warmth and tactility rather than perfection. The impact a new splashback can have on a room is unmistakable. Tiles are more design-led than ever and can completely elevate an existing kitchen. Handmade or imperfect finishes are particularly popular. Rustic ceramics with a hand painted appearance bring variation, light reflection and character. Used thoughtfully, they can create a focal point while still feeling timeless. The designers at Baked are always happy to offer guidance here. The simple installation of a new worktop can also give the kitchen a designer look and feel. You can achieve this without replacing cabinetry. Natural materials, or those that convincingly mimic them, are key. In a traditional country setting, tiled worktops are also seeing a quiet resurgence. They add texture and a subtle nostalgic feel when done well. Another simple but highly effective update is to replace existing handles with more contemporary designs. Warmer metallics such as aged brass, bronze or antique finishes are particularly on trend. They can instantly elevate even the most modest cabinetry. It’s a small change, but one that makes a noticeable difference. Don't feel you have to start from scratch. Removing a few wall units can make a big difference. Adding new tiles to the splash back or floor will instantly refresh things. A simple touch of paint can also work wonders.

AW26 Tile Trends: The Tiled Room Is Back

AW26 is the season tiles stop sitting politely in the background. They are framing floors, climbing onto ceilings and carrying colour across entire rooms. Pattern is no longer being rationed to a single feature wall, while stone-effect surfaces are becoming far too interesting to disappear behind the furniture. Baked Tiles is calling it now: the tiled room is back. Lesley Taylor, founder of Baked Tiles and BIID registered interior designer, says: "The plain tile with one decorative feature has had a very long innings. There is nothing wrong with it, but people are ready to have more fun. "Tiles are becoming the starting point for the room rather than the practical surface chosen at the end. A floor can dictate the colour palette, a border can change the proportions of a space and a heavily veined stone can do the job that wallpaper or artwork might once have done. My advice for AW26 is to choose the tile you cannot stop thinking about first, then build the room around it." Here are the tile looks Baked expects to lead the season. Floors get their frame: Borders are returning, but forget anything fussy or overly traditional. The new tile border is cleaner, bolder and often created using the same tile as the main floor. A change in direction, format or tone can be enough to frame a room, define a dining space or make a straightforward layout appear completely bespoke. Lesley explains: "I love a border because it gives a floor a proper full stop. Without one, a pattern can sometimes appear to run away into the edges of the room; frame it, and the whole layout suddenly has confidence. "It does not have to involve another decorative tile. Turn a rectangular tile through 90 degrees, introduce a narrow strip in a deeper version of the same colour or take one shade from the main pattern and use that around the edge. Draw the complete layout first, including every doorway and cabinet run, because an awkward half-border will undo all the cleverness." Products Shown: 1860 Templeton Floral Decor 15cm x 15cm, 1860 Templeton Border 15cm x 15cm, 1860 Templeton Corner 15cm x 15cm One colour is no longer enough: Colour drenching is loosening up. AW26 schemes will use several related shades rather than repeating one exact colour across every surface. For tile, this opens up far more interesting combinations: blush with oxblood, sage with bottle green or pale clay against a darker rust. Gloss can sit beside matt and smoother surfaces can meet more irregular finishes without leaving the colour family. "Matching everything perfectly can kill the character of a room," says Lesley. "You want the colours to feel related, not cloned. "Tile is brilliant for this because a glaze naturally changes with the light and a patterned surface can introduce several versions of a colour at once. Put every sample together in the actual room and remove the one that looks too neat. The slight odd one out is often what stops the scheme feeling flat." Products Shown: Little Italy Sky Blue 6.5cm x 20cm, Khadi Earthen 22.5cm x 22.5cm, Little Bricks Gloss Blue 5cm x 15cm, Little Bricks Gloss Sky 5cm x 15cm Pattern stops asking permission: The single patterned feature wall is giving way to rooms where several prints happily live together. A tiled floor might meet striped fabric, a small-scale wallpaper or a second tile used in a different format. The aim is not to make every surface compete, but neither is it to dilute the scheme until the pattern has lost its point. Lesley says: "Pattern mixing only becomes chaotic when everything is shouting at the same volume. Let one pattern be the boss and give the others a supporting role. "A large repeat on the floor can cope with something smaller on the wall because furniture breaks up the floor and changes how much of it you see. Colour is what holds it together, so take one less obvious shade from the main tile and repeat that elsewhere rather than matching the most dominant colour." Products Shown: Lava Burgundy 6.5cm x 20cm, 1860 Malvern 15cm x 15cm, 1860 Josephine 15cm x 15cm Take the colours of the coast and leave the costume: Coastal interiors are moving away from anchors, rope and anything that announces itself as seaside décor. The AW26 version borrows weathered blue, chalky white and faded terracotta, with uneven glazes bringing the softness of colour that has spent years in the sun. "No anchors. No signs saying 'beach'. No ornamental fishing nets. Take the colours of the coast and leave the costume behind. "A handmade-look blue tile with natural variation will give you far more atmosphere than a wall of nautical accessories ever could. Mix tiles from every box before they are fixed so the deeper and paler tones are scattered naturally rather than gathering in obvious patches." Products Shown: 1860 Blue 15cm x 15cm, 1860 Vanilla 15cm x 15cm, Rapture Gloss Blue Grey 3.8cm x 23.5cm, Elysse Denim 20cm x 20cm Stone gets loud: Stone-effect tiles have spent years being sold as the safe neutral. AW26 gives them a much bigger role. Stronger veining, richer colour and larger formats allow stone markings to travel across a surface with fewer interruptions. The result can carry an entire shower wall, fireplace or kitchen backdrop without needing much decoration around it. "A bold vein needs elbow room. There is no point choosing the most expressive stone in the collection and squeezing it into a splashback barely wider than the basin. "Use enough of it for the markings to travel and make sense. Always ask to see several tiles from the design before ordering, because one small sample cannot show the movement, variation or how the repeats will meet across a full wall." Products Shown: Bordeaux Marble 60cm x 120cm, Kitkat Lustre Speckled White 29.5cm x 28.4cm, Venetica Terrazzo Taupe 60cm x 60cm Tiles reach the fifth wall: In bathrooms and cloakrooms, tiles are continuing beyond the walls and onto the ceiling. It is a gutsy move, but it can make a compact room feel far more complete by removing the strip of painted ceiling that would otherwise cut across the scheme. Continuing one tile overhead works particularly well in showers and smaller rooms where every surface is seen at once. Lesley explains: "The ceiling is the surface everyone forgets until the room is nearly finished. In a small bathroom, that white rectangle can break the spell completely. "Continuing the wall tile overhead can be fantastic, but this is one trend where design enthusiasm has to meet technical common sense. The ceiling must be able to carry the weight and the preparation and adhesive need to be right for overhead fixing, so involve the installer before choosing the final tile." Products Shown: Tuscany Lattice 20cm x 20cm, Tuscany White 20cm x 20cm, Zellige Muse Mocha 10cm x 10cm, Zellige Muse Creme Brulee 10cm x 10cm The smallest room gets the biggest idea: Cloakrooms and powder rooms are becoming the testing ground for the strongest tiles of the season. Because the area is limited, homeowners can use a richer colour, bigger pattern or more premium surface without committing to it across a vast room. One confident choice will usually make more impact than several smaller decorative gestures. "A cloakroom is not where you need to behave yourself," says Lesley. "It is often the only room guests see on their own, so give them something worth looking at. "Start with the tile and plan the sanitaryware around the best part of the pattern, rather than choosing a beautiful design and then hiding its central motif beneath the toilet. Lay the floor out dry before anything is fixed and decide exactly where you want the eye to land." Real Terracotta Is a Natural Material Terracotta is made from natural clay that is shaped and fired at relatively low temperatures. Unlike porcelain or ceramic alternatives, authentic terracotta retains an earthy, organic quality that gives every tile subtle tonal variation, texture, and character. 2. Terracotta Changes Over Time One of terracotta’s greatest strengths is the way it ages. Over time, the surface develops a richer patina that adds depth and authenticity to your home. 3. Sealing Is Essential Real terracotta is naturally porous, which means it absorbs moisture and stains if left untreated. Proper sealing is one of the most important steps in installing and maintaining terracotta tiles. We have a useful terracotta document that we recommend reading here. We are frequently asked “how often should I reseal terracotta flooring?” and it largely depends on how the space is used. Busy footfall areas such as hallways and kitchens may benefit from resealing every year, while lower-traffic spaces can often go longer between treatments. Regular maintenance helps protect the tiles while preserving the rich warmth and character that makes real terracotta so timeless. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"3 / 4","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"","mimeType":"webp","title":"Baked-Real-Terracotta-Parquet-30_5cm-x-7_5cm-7_ea6096fa.webp","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/Baked-Real-Terracotta-Parquet-30_5cm-x-7_5cm-7_ea6096fa.webp?v=1778732130","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/66675850543489","size":370948,"createdAt":"2025-09-20T03:03:53Z"},{"altText":"","mimeType":"jpeg","title":"SEOon_Havana_Night_Fan_Indigo_Indigo_Plain_Real_Terracotta_Parquet_1.jpg","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/SEOon_Havana_Night_Fan_Indigo_Indigo_Plain_Real_Terracotta_Parquet_1.jpg?v=1781107639","height":4608,"width":3712,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/69651626787201","size":3776210,"createdAt":"2026-06-10T16:07:14Z"}],"isShowCaption":false,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":".Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n padding-left: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n padding-right: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n margin-left: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n margin-right: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__List {\n width: 100%;\n display: flex;\n justify-content: flex-start;\n flex-wrap: nowrap;\n gap: 13px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__List > * {\n flex: 0 0 calc((100% - 13px) / 2) !important;\n max-width: calc((100% - 13px) / 2) !important;\n min-width: 0;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__List img {\n width: calc(50% - 6.5px) !important;\n display: block;\n}","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-3","componentId":"imageGallery-ekCDDVfFFo96","componentName":"Image Gallery","type":"imageGallery","updatedAt":"2026-04-10T09:10:47.447Z","createdAt":"2026-04-10T09:10:47.447Z"} 4. Terracotta Works Beautifully with Underfloor Heating Terracotta retains heat exceptionally well, making it an excellent partner for underfloor heating systems. 5. Terracotta works in both contemporary and classic homes If you have a more contemporary home, terracotta can feel just as at home as it does in more traditional spaces. Real terracotta can be surprisingly refined, depending on the grout colour and installation pattern you choose. Parquet, basketweave, stacked, and brick bond layouts are all worth exploring. 6. It Requires the Right Cleaning Products Terracotta is porous and naturally alkaline-sensitive so harsh chemical cleaners should be avoided.  Regular sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment will help remove everyday dust and dirt, while a pH-neutral cleaner is best for keeping the surface clean without damaging the tile or sealant. {"layout":"grid","aspectRatio":"3 / 4","imagesSelected":[{"altText":"","mimeType":"jpeg","title":"SEOon_Baked_Real_Handmade_Terracotta_Lifestyle_3_Cropped.jpg","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/SEOon_Baked_Real_Handmade_Terracotta_Lifestyle_3_Cropped.jpg?v=1781107712","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/69651629506945","size":603065,"createdAt":"2026-06-10T16:08:28Z"},{"altText":"","mimeType":"jpeg","title":"SEOon_Baked_Real_Terracotta_Grouted.jpg","url":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/8649/files/SEOon_Baked_Real_Terracotta_Grouted.jpg?v=1781107715","height":2357,"width":2048,"id":"gid://shopify/MediaImage/69651629867393","size":1628309,"createdAt":"2026-06-10T16:08:30Z"}],"isShowCaption":false,"imagesInARow":2,"device":"desktop","imagesInARowMobile":2,"caption":"","isAutoPlay":false,"hideButtonAction":false,"captionAlign":"center","hidden":false,"locked":false,"blockName":"Image gallery","cssContent":".Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n padding-left: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n padding-right: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n margin-left: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__Container {\n margin-right: 0px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__List {\n width: 100%;\n display: flex;\n justify-content: flex-start;\n flex-wrap: nowrap;\n gap: 13px;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__List > * {\n flex: 0 0 calc((100% - 13px) / 2) !important;\n max-width: calc((100% - 13px) / 2) !important;\n min-width: 0;\n}\n.Avada-ImageGallery__List img {\n width: calc(50% - 6.5px) !important;\n display: block;\n}","id":"Avada-Tool__ImageGallery-8","componentId":"imageGallery-ekCDDVfFFo96","componentName":"Image Gallery","type":"imageGallery","updatedAt":"2026-04-10T09:10:47.447Z","createdAt":"2026-04-10T09:10:47.447Z"} 7. Colour Variation Is Part of the Beauty Terracotta ranges from soft pinks and warm oranges to rich burnt reds and earthy browns, with natural variation throughout. 8. Installation Matters More Than You Think Installing real terracotta requires more care than standard porcelain tiles due to its porous and often handmade nature, we recommend you always work with an expert. 9. Real Terracotta Brings Warmth Terracotta brings a natural warmth, texture, and sense of authenticity into the home that few other materials can match. Its rich earthy tones pair beautifully with warm neutrals, soft whites, natural wood, olive greens. We even love terracotta teamed with blues and pinks. Take a look at our Mediterranean Edit here, for all the inspiration you might need. 10. Grout Choice Makes a Big Difference The grout you choose can completely change the overall look of terracotta tiles. A lighter grout creates a softer, more contemporary feel, while warmer grout tones enhance the rustic character of the floor. Because terracotta is porous, tiles should always be properly sealed before and after grouting to help prevent staining and make cleaning easier during installation. We also suggest this product is installed with a wider joint to enhance its rustic quality. We suggest teaming terracotta with our Alabaster Grout And finally, enjoy it! Real terracotta is a material to be lived with and enjoyed. Its warmth, texture, variation, and natural ageing are exactly what makes it so special.
