Crackle glaze has a special place in our hearts at Baked Tiles, one of the most beautiful effects we stock. There is something wonderfully unpredictable about it. As the tile cools after firing, the surface develops a fine network of hairline cracks across the glaze, no two tiles ever quite the same. It gives a piece an aged, artisanal quality that a flat, uniform glaze simply cannot match, closer in spirit to old pottery than to a mass produced finish.
Because the effect lives in the glaze itself, crackle tiles tend to do their best work as a feature: a splashback, a fireplace surround, a decorative band within a larger scheme. Pair one with plainer tiles nearby and let the crackle carry the visual interest. If you are cutting tiles for an edge or a socket, take it slowly with a wet tile saw, since the glazed surface can chip more readily than a standard finish. Our team can talk you through grouting and sealing if crackle is new territory for you.
